As part of MIFA’s Education Program “Conversation with a Living Legend,” will feature jazz great Archie Shepp speaking with music students from Holyoke High School & Springfield Conservatory of the Arts. Shepp will talk about his unique history as a composer and performer, with a particular focus on being a musician during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 70s compared to today’s unrest, protests, and social and economic disparities.
For this special education event, in collaboration with program coordinator Stephen Burrell, MIFA is working with the Valley’s Enchanted Circle Theater to create a study program to familiarize the students with Shepp’s work in advance of the conversation, and Hampshire College Assistant Professor of African American studies, Christopher Tinson, to moderate the conversation.
This MIFA Education Program Special Event was made possible by grants from Mass Humanities and Springfield Cultural Council
“Conversation with a Living Legend” is part of a three-day celebration of the music of jazz composer and performer Archie Shepp.
