Workshop Dates: May 26 to June 9, 2020
During the workshop the artists work on pieces and ideas to be recorded in 2021
Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA
The Victory Players is a Pierrot + Percussion ensemble (flute, clarinet, piano, violin cello, percussion), playing a diverse range of contemporary music led by artistic director Ng Tian Hui. In its inaugural season, the ensemble seeks to commission three new works.
Composers are invited to submit a proposal for an 8-12 minute work to be premiered by the ensemble. Selected composers will be invited for the two-week workshop in early summer 2020 with the Victory Players, in which they will have access to top-notch young professional instrumentalists. In this workshop, composers will be given opportunity to session ideas for their work in seminar settings. Portions of their work will be featured and performed in a concert at the end of the workshop on June 8, 2020. The final work should be completed by April 2021 and will be recorded in its entirety in June 2021 by the ensemble.
A commission fee of $1,000 is available for each successful proposal; $300 to be paid up front for the commission and the remainder to be paid upon completion in April 2021. Proposals that creatively engage with the music and culture of Puerto Rico will be given preference.
The invitation to commission is open from January 30, 2020 to March 2, 2020. Review of materials will begin mid March.
Applicants must submit an online application, which includes uploading a short biography and CV, a one-page description of the proposed composition and PDFs to scores of 2-3 recent compositions. Video or audio files will be helpful in assessing the material but not necessary.
