Spotlight on Education!
A key feature of MIFA Victory Theatre is its education program that introduces elementary, secondary and higher education students to the arts.
“Arts learning experiences play a vital role in developing students’ capacities for critical thinking, creativity, imagination, and innovation. These capacities are increasingly recognized as core skills and competencies all students need as part of a high-quality and complete 21st-century education.”
Sandra Ruppert – Arts Education Partnership
MIFA receives Mass Humanities Grant for Education Program!
“Conversations with a Living Legend” Legendary Jazz musician Archie Shepp will speak to music students from SciTech, Holyoke High School and Amherst High School about his unique history as a musician during the Civil Rights Movement during the ’60’s and ’70’s compared to current unrest, protests and social economic disparities. Students will hear Archie speak about the impact the times had on his music, and also explore contemporary music and its impact on their lives: What types of music are the young people involved in? What are the influences on their music?
“Conversations with a Living Legend” will be led by Christopher Tinson, Assistant Professor of African American Studies at Hampshire College.
Enchanted Circle Theater will be working on a curriculum for the music students in preparation for these conversations.
A collaboration of MIFA Victory Theatre, Stephen Burrell, Enchanted Circle Theater, and Christopher Tinson
Music is the word!
MIFA will be working with Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra (HVGO) and their new collaborative partners Holyoke Summer Strings on student workshops and concerts for this coming year.
“We really are so grateful to Don Sanders and Kathy McKean for being such sharp art advocates that they could connect us. We appreciate everything and having the meeting under the MIFA imprimatur is a big boost to the project.”
– HVGO Board of Directors President, Madeline Weaver Blanchette
