Join MIFA Victory Theatre & Holyoke Community College on May 6, 2015, at 1pm for a
screening of the award-winning documentary film classic JAMES BALDWIN: THE PRICE
OF THE TICKET at HCC’s Leslie Phillips Theater (FORUM).
James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket is an American Masters documentary, by director
Karen Thorsen. The movie describes an overview of “The life, works and beliefs of the late
writer and civil rights activist are recounted: what it is to be born black, impoverished, gifted,
and gay in a world that has yet to understand that “all men are brothers.” Baldwin's message,
a clarion call for racial, social, and sexual equality, remains painfully relevant. The film
includes archival footage of Baldwin's public appearances as well as interviews with writers
Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, and William Styron, plus entertainer Bobby Short. "The Price of a
Ticket" is an unforgettable cinematic and emotional event.
Before the screening, the renowned West African drummer Kabisko will perform.
Formerly a resident teaching artist at New York’s Lincoln Center, he now teaches at the
Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School (PVPA) and the Five Colleges. Also as part of
HCC’s “Dialogues on Race” series, filmmakers Karen Thorsen & Douglas K. Dempsey will
host a Conversation with Jimmy after the screening.
